Director / Digital Artist Sammy Rawal has earned international attention for his original, hyper-stylized approach to image-making featuring innovation with digital techniques.
Sammy’s work is informed by a mashup of culturally diverse influences, his Indo-African heritage, fashion and hip-hop. He has brought his signature style to projects for Converse, Reebok, Twitter, SoulCycle and Lululemon. For Johannes Leonardo, Sammy directed the Kraft Singles’ video for “Square It (feat. Kelis),” starring voguing legend Honey Balenciaga. Sammy’s passion for LGBTQ rights is seen in projects such as “Life’s A Ball” for Equinox, which Adweek called the most “show-stopping” of 2019 Pride campaigns. The campaign film, digital art and bespoke downloadable track celebrated icons of the NYC ballroom movement.
Sammy has created live tour and broadcast visuals for musical icons Lizzo, Cardi B and Elton John. He is a recipient of the Prism Prize’s Special Achievement Award, presented to a Canadian music video icon for their artistic achievements and exceptional contribution to music video art on a world stage.
Sammy’s work has been shown at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Musee d’Art Contemporain de Montreal, and Nuit Blanche. His music video work has been nominated at the UK Music Video Awards, the Berlin Music Video Awards, and the Juno Awards.
Sammy is also the co-founder and resident DJ of Yes Yes Y’all, Canada’s largest hip-hop/dancehall party that creates spaces for queer people of color and a member of the ballroom community House of Gorgeous Gucci.
